The Hive Pass, Salt Lake City’s new annual UTA pass exclusively for city residents, launches on March 1, 2014.

The pilot program is the result of a partnership between Salt Lake City and UTA and will offer city residents an annual transit pass at a deep discount — just $360 a year!

There are two options for pass payment:

  • $350 full payment to cover the entire year ($10 discount for full payment)
  • $360 payable in $30 monthly installments

Special Event: The Air We Breathe

On Tuesday, February 4, KUED and a variety of community partners will come together for an evening to explore “The Air We Breathe.”

The free community event begins with a preview of “The Air We Breathe,” a locally-produced, 30 minute documentary that examines Utah’s air quality.

Attendees will also hear from Robert Grow, Executive Director of Envision Utah, and have a Q&A with University of Utah Program for Air Quality, Health & Society Director Dr. Robert Paine.

SLCgreen will be there, and we hope you will too!

SmartTrips Rolls into a New Neighborhood

Are you dreaming of warmer days and bluer skies? So are we!

SLCgreen was recently awarded a grant from the Utah Clean Air Partnership (UCAIR) to fund our SmartTrips 2014 neighborhood! Even though it is hazy and cold outside, we’re moving full speed ahead with some exciting plans for 2014.

The newly launched SmartTripsSLC Instagram is making a splashy debut, hosting a series of images from the new neighborhood. Take a peek and see if you can #guesswhere in SLC!

New Incubator Farm Launches this Spring

Ponder this:

For every one farmer and rancher under the age of 25, there are five who are 75 or older, according to the Department of Agriculture.  If we do not support new and beginning farmers, who will grow our food into the future?

The Green Urban Lunchbox project is starting a new incubator (or community) farm in Layton, Utah this spring. What was once an abandoned orchard will be brought back to life as a place for new farmers to have access to land, water, tools and training.

“This is a great chance for people to get into farming, without all the cost,” says Green Urban Lunchbox founder and director Shawn Peterson. “Our plots will run from $150-500 a year and range in size from 1/8th of an acre to 1 acre.” Continue reading →

‘Tis the season for New Years Resolutions.

While you’re revisiting resolutions to exercise, eat healthy and spend more time with those you love (a great way to start the new year!), consider making one more resolution — to help clear the air.

Through the winter Care to Clear the Air project (2010-2012), a series of videos captured the stories of residents making a resolution to limit their impact on air quality by driving less.

Watch the videos below to hear from people that have done everything from moving closer to where they work, to biking, carpooling and taking public transit.

Their stories will inspire you to make your own resolution to help clear the air!

Sustainable City Dashboard

Today SLCgreen joined Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker to unveil a new and innovative tool to track our sustainability efforts and engage with the public.

The Sustainable City Dashboard website features over 100 different metrics from 12 core areas of livability: Air & Climate, Energy, Recycling, Transportation, Open Space, Water, Urban Forestry, Arts & Culture, Housing, Community Health & Safety, Food & Nutrition and Education.

“The Sustainable City Dashboard is an effort to openly engage with residents as we work toward our goals for the future,” said Mayor Becker. “The tool illuminates a broad and ambitious agenda to protect our resources, enhance our assets and establish a path toward greater resiliency and vitality for every aspect of our community.”

The dashboard also features a venue for residents to voice their ideas and concerns about all aspects of Salt Lake City life. The new format, facilitated through Open City Hall, provides the opportunity for two-way communication and enhanced idea sharing.

We hope that Salt Lake City residents will see the new dashboard as an opportunity to explore what their city is doing to improve our community, and become part of the process by sharing their own ideas on how we can reach our goals.

Give Hope, Opportunity & Training to New Farmers

The Green Urban Lunch Box, a project of the Community Foundation of Utah, is preparing to launch an incubator farm in the spring of 2014.

An incubator farm offers urban farmers access to land on which they can start their own growing operations with guidance from experienced farmers. The Green Urban Lunchbox’s planned incubator farm is located in Layton, UT on an old fruit orchard leased from the Utah Department of Transportation.

The Challenge of the 100 Mile Meal

This evening, Salt Lake City Green and Mayor Ralph Becker will host the 100 Mile Meal: Food with a Salt Lake City Story. The meal represents a celebration of Salt Lake City’s local food, farms and economy, while illustrating a commitment to sustainable agriculture.

Did you know the average meal in the United States travels 1,500 miles from the farm to your plate? Food that travels long distances impacts:

  • Environment. A larger carbon footprint due to fuel consumption and polluting emissions.
  • Food Security. Limited accountability due to large processing and distribution chains leaves food more vulnerable to contamination.
  • Nutrition. Fruits and veggies are most nutritious (and delicious!) when they are fresh.
  • Economy. Local farms mean more local jobs and revenue.

The 100 Mile Meal features seasonal ingredients sourced from farms within 100 miles of Mayor Becker’s office. In this day and age, this was no easy feat.
