New EV Chargers at Glendale Park: Expanding Access to Sustainable Transportation in Salt Lake City

A dark electric car is parked next to a white IntelliCharge charging station mounted on a red pole. In the background is Glendale Park on a sunny day with playground equipment, shade coverings, and trees.

As more people choose electric vehicles (EVs), shared spaces are becoming more important to support charging needs. We’re excited to share that we have added two new chargers at the new Glendale Regional Park, installed in partnership with Grid Elevated!

Charging stations in parks and community spaces allow EV drivers to charge their cars in places they already visit, making EV ownership more practical with less planning ahead. The City has prioritized adding chargers at parks so EV drivers can conveniently recharge while spending quality time in our open spaces.

Glendale Park (1375 West 1700 South) is a major open-space project for gathering, events, and a wide range of recreational opportunities in the Glendale community. It’s also the City’s first Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES) pre-certification project (like LEED certifications for buildings, but for landscapes instead).

SITES projects reduce water and energy use, increase biodiversity, and protect critical ecosystems (among many more eco-friendly benefits!) to create sustainable and resilient landscapes. The EV chargers at the park are part of the high sustainability standards for this project. They also increase clean transportation options, helping to improve our air quality in the long run.

While public parks offer easier access to EV chargers, they also present some challenges. Electrical capacity can be limited, and higher usage requires frequent maintenance. So the City partnered with Utah-based nonprofit Leaders for Clean Air (LFCA) to install IntelliCharge chargers by Grid Elevated, a local energy tech company. IntelliCharge combines durable hardware with intelligent software. This allows for consistent charging and helps the City manage usage, energy demand, and reliability in one centralized platform.

LFCA purchased and donated the Level 2 charging stations. Their donation eliminated the hardware cost for the City and helped speed up installation. LFCA combined a “pay-it-forward” gifting model with rebates to help fund and install approximately 4,000 charging stations across Utah!

These unique partnerships support the City’s sustainability goals and create a foundation for charging expansion in the city. The Glendale Park chargers join IntelliCharge stations at the Hogle Zoo, University of Utah, Grand America Hotel, and Citizen West apartments.

About Leaders for Clean Air

Leaders for Clean Air (LFCA) is a Utah-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to accelerating the transition to a zero-emission society. Founded by a group of Utah business leaders — including Packsize founder Hanko Kiessner — LFCA was created in response to a simple observation: Utah’s air pollution hurts public health and the state’s economy, and the single most effective way to clean it up is to electrify transportation.

Doing that requires charging infrastructure to be everywhere people already are. To date, LFCA has helped fund and facilitate the installation of approximately 4,000 EV charging stations across Utah, contributing to millions of pounds of avoided CO₂ emissions and demonstrating one of the highest measurable climate impacts per dollar donated of any nonprofit model in the region.
